Oral cancer is one of the most common types of cancer – 30,000-40,000 new patients are registered each year in the United States alone. Despite the advance of modern medicine, this cancer still has very high mortality. If the disease is diagnosed and treated in early stages, the results of the treatment are much better. That is why it is important to diagnose the cancer as early as possible, and one of the best ways to ensure that is proper oral cancer screening. The screening can be performed practically during your every visit to the dentist, which is a standard at our practice. The process is quick, painless, and comfortable, and includes a visual inspection of your mouth, and palpation of your jaws and neck. As explained above, being able to diagnose the disease early drastically improves the results of the treatment, which is exactly why oral cancer screening is so important and valuable procedure.
The symptoms of oral cancer in the mouth cavity are diverse and vary among the patients, but most commonly include white/red patches, persistent irritation or sore, small crusts or erosions, as well pain, numbness, or many other changes on the lips. Changes in occlusion (bite), difficulty moving the tongue, speaking, swallowing, and so on, are also potential symptoms of oral cancer. If you notice any of the above symptoms, it is highly advisable to contact us and schedule an appointment. Please note that none of these symptoms is pathognomonic for oral cancer. This means that, even if you have one of the symptoms described above, it is quite possible that they are caused by some other, often trivial medical condition. Nevertheless, if you notice any of these symptoms, you should still schedule an appointment, just to be sure.
